<p>Speed diets or rapid weight loss diets tend to put out great advertising copy that is very hard to resist. However, all diets, no matter which one you choose, Weight Watchers, Atkins or fad diet, depend on overweight people making lifestyle changes in order for them to work permanently.</p>
<p>There is a very apposite saying: if you always do what you always did, then you will always get what you always got. That says it all. You can lose weight with all but the stupidest of diets, but if you go back to your old ways when you hit your target weight, you MUST slowly, but surely creep back to your old weight.</p>
<p>If you give your body more calories than it needs, it will store them for when it does need them. The problem is that that day never comes for too many people, because they never exert themselves. This is especially true of fad diets like the &#8216;cabbage water&#8217; diet. Yes, you will lose weight on it, but you would lose weight by fasting whatever you did. For a while, and then you might get sick. For a diet to work, it has to be adaptable and enjoyable enough for you to be able to stick with it for the rest of your life. Make no mistake, dieting is long-haul.</p>

<p>Although there is a lot of nonsense talked about losing weight, there are some truths that have a part to play in nearly any program you choose to follow. One of these truths is that it is better to eat many small meals during the day (approximately 5-6), than to go all day without eating and then stuffing yourself at dinner in the evening. This is commonly called &#8216;grazing&#8217;.</p>
<p>Have you ever asked yourself why this might be so? Well, the fact is, that the average human body can only process about 250 calories per hour. If you eat more than that, you are almost certainly overloading your digestive system. This is why it is important, because if your body cannot use all the calories that you give it, it will stockpile them.</p>
<p>Your body can only use up what it needs to execute the job that it is active with, that is, what you are putting it through. If you are watching TV, a lot of of those 250 will be stored. If you are exercising, most will be burned up. It stores the remainder as body fat. Your body has learned through evolution that hard times will come, so it prepares for them. It is like us putting excess money in a savings account or people hoarding food if a bad winter is forecast.</p>
<p>However, these days in the West, we rarely face those lean times any longer. Therefore, that fat is never used up and we just keep adding to it until we resolve, by choice, to limit our intake of calories or increase our amount of exercise.</p>
<p>Knowing this information, what can we do with it? Well, if you were to want to lose weight, you ought to be consuming no more than 1,500 calories a day (or whatever your program tells you), so 1,500 divided by 250 is six. if you ate 250 calories every other hour, that would give you twelve hours.</p>
<p>Therefore, eating light but often would be a helpful strategy or program to follow, because first of all, you are only providing your body with what it needs, when it requires it and secondly, you are able to better maintain a steady blood sugar level, which means that you level out the spikes and troughs you experience in a normal day&#8217;s cycle.</p>
<p>Two hundred and fifty calories does not sound a lot, but it is surprising what it will stretch too, if you take the trouble to investigate. It is true that you will have to severely restrict some foodstuffs, like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, but whoever honestly thought that you could lose weight by eating that stuff anyway?</p>
<p>If you do not have time to cook a number of times every day, look in your supermarket. There are loads of &#8216;250 calorie&#8217; microwave meals. You don&#8217;t want to eat that? I can&#8217;t blame you. so get a good cookbook, which shows calorie content. You are at work all day? OK, eat some fruit, but choose wisely. It can be done, it only requires a little will and planning.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everybody likes a meal properly cooked. The proof of this, if it needs proving, is that members of religious orders like monks often have to eat dreary food like porridge, gruel and unleaven bread for penance.</p>
<p>I would like to share a few tips with you to help you get the most out of your food.</p>
<p>Chicken Tarragon &#8211; I love chicken tarragon, but this is my favourite version. Take: 1 chicken; .25 teaspoon of chopped onions; 1 heaped tablespoon of dried tarragon (double of fresh); brown stock or Bovril and water, cream, flour and salt.</p>
<p>Roast the chicken, carve it and place in a plate. Pour off the fat and make a gravy with it, the salt and the flour. Bulk the gravy up with the stock or Bovril and water. Add the tarragon and cream and cook for a minute or two. Serve with the gravy already poured over the chicken or serve the gravy separately. Add your favourite vegetables. This recipe will serve four.</p>
<p>Chicken Left-Overs &#8211; if you are unsure what to do with left over chicken, you could do worse than try this recipe.</p>
<p>Chop the chicken up small and mix it with sliced avocado. Cover with mayonnaise and sprinkle with crumbled, fried, crispy bacon. If this sounds good to you, take it from me that it tastes even better.</p>
<p>Apple Sauce &#8211; if you like apple sauce with your pork, bake a couple of cooking apples alongside your joint of pork. Prepare and core them just as you would as if you were going to cook them separately. Sprinkle with sugar, if required. Then, run a knife tip around them, so that they will puff upwards, but still retain their form. Gorgeous.</p>
<p>Sauces &#8211; if you cannot get the sauce right, just strain it and do not tell anyone. Nobody will know the difference and what are strainers for if not straining?</p>
<p>Soups And Stews &#8211; if you find that you have added too much salt to a soup or stew at the last moment, do not worry. Put a cube of sugar in a large spoon and lower it into the liquid for twenty seconds. It will absorb the excess salt. If you have longer, and it is fitting, add a diced potato and it will absorb the salt too.</p>
<p>Pie Crust &#8211; if you need a quick, yet flexible topping for a savoury pie like chicken or beef, leave the pastry off. Take a large bag of crisps; pop the bag to let the air out and scrunch it up until the crisps are but crumbs. Tip this over your pie before you bake it. It is unusual but you can experiment with different flavoured crisps.</p>

<p>For instance, my father was a Second World War teenager and had always wanted to go to America. It was the first thing he did when he retired. Three months travelling wherever he could think of by bus and when he came back he was full of tales about whom he had met and what he had seen. but he could not hide his amazement about how many really fat people there were there.</p>
<p>I believe the organizations who say that this is largely to do with Americans&#8217; love of hamburgers, pizzas and doughnuts; foodstuffs that have only recently become popular in Europe. Great Britain was the first country to follow the American way, as you would imagine, because it was easier for the advertisers, both countries speaking English.</p>
<p>Sure enough, Britons are becoming obese at an disturbing rate too. Those adverts and trends are also visible in mainland Europe, but at least there are enough warnings now. Anybody who falls for into the junk food trap these days, only has himself to blame. We have been warned.</p>
<p>I now travel a lot in Asia and it is a crying shame to see rehashes of old adverts promoting junk food. For example, Thai food is one of the best in the world, yet Knorr is trying to persuade family cooks that they do not have time to prepare sauces or soups; that they should tip the salty contents of one of their boxes into boiling water and that nobody would know.</p>
<p>I can assure you that they would know where I live. However, firms like Knorr know, that if they can sabotage one generation then they have won. Likewise with McDonald&#8217;s, get one generation of parents to take their children there every week and it becomes a family tradition. Bang! They are in!</p>
<p>I saw it happen in the UK and it is so hard to see it happening in Asia too.</p>
<p>If you want to learn the secret of losing weight naturally, I will tell you. The best of all methods is to only eat food that you have prepared yourself. There you are, easy! Or at least easily said. We can moderate that rule if necessary, to include food that has been prepared by people with your interests at heart, people who love you. You can also include good quality restaurants, but that is just about the limit.</p>
<p>Do not eat potato crisps or chips, shop-bought biscuits, cakes, pies, pasties, hamburgers or sandwiches. If you yearn for that stuff, then get up and cook it yourself! It is called eating well and people used to do it naturally because in those days, there were no fast food stores and people took home made sandwiches and salads to work or school.</p>

Too many people these days just think its a question of &#8216;getting as much down as possible in as little time as possible&#8217;. This is the wrong attitude.</p>
<p>After all, most people realize that a good meal does not consist of eating as many chips as possible in fifteen minutes, so why should that principle not apply to having a drink too? You will get far more pleasure from a bottle of wine, if you spend an extra dollar on it and drink it slowly with a friend and some appropriate food than if you swill down a cheap bottle of plonk on your own. It makes evident sense, but not everyone realizes it.</p>
<p>So, with that thought in mind, I have put together a few tips on how to get more enjoyment from your alcoholic drinks, if you are old enough and of that turn of mind.</p>
<p>Gin and Vodka &#8211; if these white spirits are your proffered tipple, always keep the bottle in the fridge, not the drinks cupboard. Keep the mixers in the fridge too. That way the ice will last longer and you will not be tempted to have to swig it down before the ice melts. If you are having friends around, go one step further and put the bottle in the freezer. It will not go solid. You can even cut the top off a plastic cola bottle, put the bottle of gin or vodka in that, fill it with water and then freeze it. Remove the plastic bottle and you have an attractive &#8220;collar of ice&#8221; around your bottle.</p>
<p>The Last Tot &#8211; five minutes or so after finishing a bottle of spirits, tip it out one more time and the bottle that you thought was drained will deliver one more tot of contents. It is not a lot, but it is a pleasant free surprise. The same works for many alcohol based products including underarm roll-on and scent.</p>
<p>White Wine &#8211; white wines taste better when they have been gently chilled over a protracted period, but if you get taken by surprise visitors, put the bottle of wine in a container of ice and cold water. Try not to have to put it in the deep freeze, it is too harsh, but if you must, then ten minutes is all that it requires.</p>
<p>Port &#8211; it is always better to decant port and older, heavier red wines, because of the dregs that may be at the bottom of the bottle, which tastes awful and because it assists the aeration of the wine. However, it is not always easy to see when the dregs are coming. The manuals say to use a candle, but they were written a hundred years ago. The strong beam from a torch is much better. Try using a Durabeam because its swivel head allows it to be directed more accurately.</p>
<p>Decanters &#8211; sometimes the stopper becomes stuck fast. Tap it with another glass item and it should come loose. If not, run the neck of the decanter under hot water for a few seconds and it will come out.</p>
<p>Labels &#8211; if you store your wine in a damp place where the labels are likely to rot or fall off, spray them with hair lacquer beforehand.</p>
